Making your move less stressful | Monday Minute

Moving is one of my least favorite parts about real estate.  Sure it's exciting to move into your new place, but the process of actually moving is often the worst.  Probably one of the reasons there isn’t a show on HGTV about moving. But let's talk about 4 things that can help make an often daunting task, into a more manageable one!

  1. Start early.  I often tell people, you are moving, so let’s start preparing to do that.  Don’t leave it all for the last minute.  Especially if you are selling your home too, this is a great excuse to start thinning out your belongings.  Start by packing up the things you don’t use on a day to day basis.  You might even be surprised at how much that is.  Which leads me to #2.

  2. Donate or Toss.  Why waste time or energy moving stuff to your new place that you never use?  If you don’t use it, toss it or donate it.  This is a phenomenal time to start getting rid of those chatkis you have collected over the years that just take up shelf space.

  3. Moving supplies.  Don’t make your job harder.  Having the right supplies will make your job easier.  Get a good tape dispenser, get bubble wrap, get boxes.  If you are trying to save money, look on craigslist and Facebook marketplace where people often are getting rid of boxes that they just used to move.

  4. Hire the right movers.  There are movers and then there are guys who drive a truck and they are not the same.  You definitely get what you pay for when moving.  Look for a company that trains their employees.  Your realtor should be able to give you some great referrals for great local moving companies.  This is also something to start when 30+ days out.  The earlier you start the better chance you will have of getting the date you need to book for the move.  The longer you wait, the more likely they will be booked up.

Moving doesn’t have to be stressful if planned out accordingly. If you are looking to make a move, give us a call.  We look forward to helping you!
